Description

one of many types of japanese cicada.
(I was asked to write more about the animals I take pictures of so here you go! :) (Smile) )
Cicadas kind of "hibernate" underground for years. the japanese ones just for one year and in other parts of the world some even hibernate for 7 years! they then emerge as little monsters as seen here fav.me/d92vvix as you can see this is just a shell and doesnt at all look like the Abura Zemi here in the photo. yes they are kind of like a butterfly, just more badass.
They then sing the song of their people to attract a mate and soon afterwards sadly die.
The females lay eggs deep underground and then also die. the new generation then waits a year underground to repeat the cycle.
if you watch japanese movies are anime you should be very familiar with the sound they make! the "song" of the japanese cicada is always used to indicate that a scene takes place in the summer and if you listen very closely you can even figure out EXACTLY in which month and even WHERE the scene takes place even without looking at the screen because of the different cicada types that all have a little bit of a different song. to a foreigner in japan its barely noticable but japanese people or people who properly listen, can easily distinguish them. and by knowing what cicada sings what song you can determine the time and place since one type emerges later than the others and hangs out at other places. like for example in the mountains, in parks even in towns, or on the countryside. all distinguishable.

damn...that was longer than expected...
hope you enjoyed my badly written intel ^^

fun fact: the character design of "Cell" in dragonball is designed around the cicada. look at the first "version" of cell (he transforms...like a cicada!) and you notice especially the mouth is similar. Cell Icon

It was actually a lot of fun! At first it will stick to the victims clothing with the tiny hooks on its feet then after both bug and friend are done freaking out the cicada will just fly away. It is nice because they don't sting or bite. The only time a cicada actually hurt was when I was riding my bike and it flies into my chest! There is a distinct thud and like you said that weird much lower pitched noise they make when they are irritated. I wish the ones here in America were as fun as the Japanese cicadas.
